Yoga & Health: What Can Yoga Do For You?

Yoga HealthAs people across the country become more involved and begin taking more responsibility for their health, more exercise options are being explored. This includes the practice of yoga and other types of alternative health practices.

The link between yoga and overall health has been known and explored for centuries by Eastern cultures, especially those in India, as well as in many other Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Yoga health is achieved through the practice of poses (called asanas) and controlled breathing that is believed to strengthen the connection between the body and mind.

For many of the cultures that utilize the connection between yoga and health, the biggest benefit is its effect on the mind. Since it is considered to be a meditative practice and takes a heightened level of concentration, supporters of this practice claim that it can help clear the mind, improve memory and cognition, strengthen focus, and in some religious practices achieve a higher level of awareness.

The physical benefits of the yoga / health connection shouldn't be ignored, however. As a physically demanding practice, yoga is great exercise. It elongates and strengthens muscles, improves flexibility and balance, and builds core strength. In more advanced yoga poses, upper arm, leg, and core strength are needed to perform the positions properly.

If you are considering adding yoga to your health regimen or are interested in learning more about what is yoga, there are a variety of poses ranging from novice to advanced and experts at almost every gym that can help you. To ensure you are healthy enough for yoga exercises, it is important to consult with your primary health care provider to ensure you won't risk injury.
