Sandra's
Story: The Frustrating Cycle of UTI's,
Yeast Infections and Antibiotics
Sandra* was plagued by urinary
tract infections (UTI’s) for years. Her primary care physician
and gynecologist both attributed this to a very active sex life
with her husband. It’s a common reason for UTI’s; during
intercourse the male organ rubs substantially against the bladder
walls and can cause bacteria-inviting irritation in women.
She would take antibiotics for
the urinary tract infections, after which she would inevitably need
a prescription to get rid of itchy, irritating vaginal yeast infections.
In fact, vaginal yeast infections after antibiotics have grown so
common in women that many doctors give both prescriptions at the
same time.
Sandra’s urinary tract infections would go away after the
antibiotics for about a month, and then they would painfully return.
She would go back for more antibiotics, and afterward treat the
yeast.
One day, Sandra and her husband
decided it was time to stop using birth control. The urinary tract
infections ceased immediately. About a year later,
she read in a magazine that the “non-oxynol 9” in spermicidal
gel, which women use in diaphragms, was notorious for causing UTI’s.
The article also suggested ways to resolve non-kidney related UTI’s
without antibiotics.
Sandra was furious. Both her doctors
knew she used a diaphragm with this spermicide. But neither had
ever given her this information. Maybe they didn’t know. She
sent copies to them, hoping to help other women.
But Sandra wasn’t feeling
well in other ways, frequently getting flu-like symptoms, fingernail
and sinus infections, toenail fungus and bowel disturbances. She
went for a barrage of tests but they all came back “normal”.
She was given antibiotics for the infections, medication for acid
reflux and ointments for the toe fungus.
Finally, a friend sent her to
a “complementary medicine” doctor who blended homeopathy
and natural remedies with conventional treatment.
This doctor tested Sandra’s
fecal matter and found she had a vast overgrowth of candida yeast
fungus which had taken over her intestines and was eating all the
nutrients she couldn’t digest, causing many imbalances.
The overgrowth of candida came
from Sandra’s long term use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories,
especially during the years of UTI’s. This had killed off
all her good stomach bacteria, thus lowering her immune system and
allowing more ailments.
The alternative physician started
her on the way to healing through herbals, probiotics (good bacteria
replacements), natural yeast cleansers, and advice for lifestyle
and diet changes.
Today, Sandra is free of UTI’s
and yeast, armed with good information, and still helping other
women.

Closing note: Over-the-counter
fungicides for vaginal yeast are now available to women. But if
yeast is suspected in the intestines, an internal anti-fungal prescription
is needed.
