Whey Protein

Whey ProteinOne of the most common types of protein is whey protein. It is most commonly found in supplements and protein shakes that are often used by athletes, because it absorbs and is burned off quickly, making it ideal for the building of muscle.

A protein that is found in milk, whey protein is what is left over after milk coagulates. This matter is then usually dried and condensed to make it easy to take via supplement, but it is also found in products like cottage cheese.

Whey protein has three forms, and depending on the form, it offers different benefits. The three types of whey are:

  • Concentrates - low in fat and cholesterol but high in carbohydrates and lactose, this form is 29-89% pure protein.
  • Isolates - this form is low in fat and contains no lactose, so it is ideal for those with sensitive stomachs. It is over 90% pure protein.
  • Hydrolysates - this predigested form is easy absorbed by the body but offers a bitter taste.

Whey protein may be a great option if you get little protein through your diet or you are working out a lot in order to build muscle. However, it is important to consult with your primary care provider or an experienced nutritionist or dietitian before you begin taking any kind of supplement, including protein.
