What is Eczema?

What is eczema to a person suffering from the disorder? It is an allergic condition that causes inflammation of the skin. The person experiences intense itching and his or her skin is dry and swollen.

What is eczema triggered by? A reaction can be triggered by anything that touches the skin (detergents, creams, clothing, weather) and usually happens to people who have a lifelong tendency of having allergic reactions. Their skin is easily irritated.

What is eczema like on the body? It looks like dry flaky skin on areas that are red and inflamed. These areas burn, itch and irritate sufferers and usually appear on the face, arms and legs. What is eczema to the population? It can affect any race or age group, although 20 percent of those with eczema are children. One to two percent of adults suffer from the condition. The disorder can be temporary for some and chronic for others. For lifelong sufferers, the flare-ups can be sporadic or constant.

Eczema suffers are advised not to scratch their rash, despite the severe itching. Scratching the rash could worsen the skin’s condition. Staying away from the items that cause an allergic reaction is good way to treat the eczema. Also, taking warm showers instead of baths with a mild soap can also help. Consult your doctor for further care.
