Weight Loss for Teens Prevents Health Issues Later in Life

Teens who gain too much weight are putting themselves at risk of being overweight or obese in adulthood. One of the major reasons that teen weight gain is dangerous is because of the teenager’s ability to grow new fat cells. Recent studies have shown that, from birth to our early twenties, our bodies are able to grow new fat cells to store fat. In adulthood, our existing fat cells simply get bigger as needed for fat storage. Therefore, weight maintenance and weight loss for teens are key ways that individuals can prevent extreme weight gain in adulthood.

Weight loss for teens, however, requires a delicate balance between health and appearance issues. Teens are easily influenced by media pressure to look a certain way and perhaps be too thin. If not handled properly, weight loss for teens can morph into eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa, conditions which cause many health other health problems and may be life threatening. Teens should be taught that a little weight gain is normal during adolescence and is nothing to be alarmed about.

Instead of trying fad or starvation diets, weight loss for teens should focus on establishing healthy habits for life. For example, many teens have achieved weight loss by simply switching from sugary sodas to diet sodas. Teens should also learn to avoid emotional eating and binge eating. The teenage years are a good time for young people to pay attention to what it feels like to be full, rather than stuffed.

Another important lesson for teens struggling with weight loss is how to replace junk foods with nutritious, low-calorie foods. This is a lesson that parents can help teens with on a daily basis. For each meal, parents can help teens calculate the amount of calories, fat, etc. and show teens how to limit the amount of calories consumed every day. Weight loss for teens is actually a fantastic way to get the whole family involved in a healthier lifestyle of nutritious food and regular exercise.
