Starvation
Diets And Low Carbohydrate, High Protein Diets.
Starvation
diets (less than 800 calories per day) and skipping meals
cause more harm than good. Starvation diets of 500 calories
or less can lead to gallstones. When you eat too little
your body will switch into starvation mode and store fat
rather than use it, slowing your metabolism down. Starvation
diets leave dieters hungry and those on this type of diet
tend to overeat
as well as make unwise decisions. "I didn't eat breakfast
or lunch so I can afford to eat an extra helping of cake."
A person
following any type of starvation diet can be left weak,
dizzy, and undernourished. This type of dieting can lead
to more severe starvation diets like Anorexia Nervosa and
Bulimia Nervosa. When the body reaches starvation mode complications
occur such as:
- Electrolyte imbalances causing dehydration, muscle spasms, and in severe cases cardiac arrest
- Hypokalemia (potassium deficiency) & Chronic Hypokalemia
- Depression, anxiety, irritability, and anger
Many
of these new low carbohydrate and high protein diets are tricking
the body into starvation.
"An attempt to improve on the poor success rates found
with dieting has resulted in the development of a very unhealthy
approach to dealing with the hunger drive and losing weight:
low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets. The basic mechanisms
of this popular approach involves suppressing the hunger drive
by tricking the body into making adjustments usually brought
on only by disease or starvation." (The McDougall Plan
for Super Health and Life-Long Weight Loss)
Ketosis, which is a process whereby the body burns stored
fat for fuel occurs when carbohydrates are cut completely
out of a diet, is thought to put the body in a state of starvation.
The body then will turn to its own vital organs and rob it
of fuel.
A
well-balanced, low-fat, high in complex carbohydrates diet
is the best diet approach.
Eat a variety of foods in small portions. Instead of simple
carbohydrates (fructose, and sucrose), eat complex carbohydrates
such as: vegetables, whole grains, beans, and peas. Reduce
your fat and alcohol intake. A well balanced diet and exercise
is the safest and ultimately most effective way to lose
weight permanently.
Many people are turning to alternative
therapies for treatment.
One weight loss health tip
from the Prescription for Nutritional Healing is
to use one part pure virgin olive oil and two parts apple
cider vinegar to massage on the body to get rid of fat.
"Knead lightly but firmly over the fat areas at least
three times weekly. This treatment is also good for sore
and stiff joints." Also suggested in the Prescription
for Nutritional Healing is Växa's homeopathic
medicinal Cell-U-Lite.
