Emotional eating leading to overeating is a habit that can be taught unintentionally early on. It is the idea that food can be used to provide comfort or used as a reward. Many parents will take their children out for ice cream or junk food when they have had a bad day at school, whenever they had to get shots or vaccinations, or maybe just because the parent felt guilty over something done to the child. Also, parents may reward a child with food/junk food for good grades, good behavior, or for a bribery of sorts ("I know you don't like getting shots, mommy will buy you a candy bar when she gets back.") This of course is not to say that you shouldn't take your child out for ice cream when he/she makes good grades for fear that they may become overeaters, but use caution when continually rewarding them with food. To avoid teaching emotional eating and overeating try to change up your reward system with taking your child to the movies, the zoo, the science museum, or simply tell them and everyone you come in contact with how proud you are about their good deeds.
Emotional eating/overeating in the young or the old can stem from boredom. Other factors that lead to emotional eating/overeating are:
- Insecurities at a social event (avoiding interaction by eating)
- Stress
- Fatigue
- Tension
- Depression
- Anger
- Loneliness (filling a void)
The best way to combat emotional eating/overeating is to monitor your habits. If you find that you are overeating every time you and your significant other argue or you find that you are overeating every time your in-laws are in town then change your behavior. When you are starring into the refrigerator, drumming up a snack, and when you are not even hungry, stop and go outside and take a walk, read a book or magazine, do some laundry instead, call a friend and invite them to a movie, or go to one alone. Distracting yourself with something else that you enjoy is key to avoiding emotional eating and overeating.
If you cannot control the emotional eating and overeating, then please see your doctor so that he may investigate further into the cause. It could be a medicine that is being taken, a medical disorder, or a psychological factor. Knowing why someone is overeating is half of the battle; a doctor can help plan out the best course of action. Many people are turning to alternative therapies for treatment.
