The Body Mass Index is a diagnostic tool meant to measure the weight status in adults
over the age of 20. The BMI ranges are based on the effect that body weight has on disease
and death. Common conditions related to being overweight and obese are:
- Premature death
- Cardiovascular disease
- High blood pressure
- Osteoarthritis
- Some cancers
- Diabetes
It is possible to have two people with the
same BMI, but they have a different percentage of body fat. Someone may have more muscle
than fat, but be the same size (weight & height) as someone who is overweight.
