Whether you live in New York City or the Black Hills of South Dakota, you will experience stress in one form or another. Most of us are familiar with urban stressors such as phones ringing, rush-hour traffic, work deadlines, and financial worries. Therefore, from coast to coast and desert to prairie, all of us can benefit with a list of ways to relieve stress.

Stress can affect you physically, emotionally, and psychologically. While not all types of stress are unhealthy, there are several ways in which stress can lead to long-term physical ailments. Exposure to chronic stress has been known to cause headaches, a weakened immune system, depression, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, tooth and gum disease, ulcers, and other stomach problems. You may not be able to completely avoid the things that stress you out, but you can learn some of the following ways to relieve stress:

  • Mediate
  • Try yoga
  • Play games
  • Laugh
  • Listen to music
  • Take a walk
  • Get regular exercise and enough sleep
  • Eat a healthier diet
  • Learn communication skills
  • Learn to say no
  • Stop procrastinating
  • Spend time around animals and/or pets
  • Be optimistic
  • Hang around positive people
  • Work on a relaxing hobby like drawing or reading
  • Take a long weekend
  • Take a nap

In a nutshell, your best ways to relieve stress are activities which take you away from the stressful situation and give you a better perspective. Many people have found that keeping a journal is one of the most useful ways to relieve stress. By writing down a list of which situations cause you to be stressed out, you can learn how to cope better with those situations the next time.
