Taking Vitamins to Improve Your Memory
When researching memory function, you may read that taking some vitamins to improve your memory may be beneficial. It can be tempting to take that information and run to the pharmacy to pick up supplements, but it is important to realize that these vitamins may not be the cure-all you are expecting; the effects they have can vary between individuals. Having realistic expectations of your supplements is key. That being said, taking vitamins and memory medicine may help with things not limited memory function, such as:
- Feeling more energetic. Fatigue and weakness are two ailments that Vitamin B-12 is sometimes shown to help with. In turn, if you are feeling more alert you may have less trouble remembering certain things. Low Vitamin B levels can cause memory loss, so making sure you do not have a deficiency may be a step in helping improve your memory.
- Vitamin C and foods containing Vitamin C can boost your alertness and aide in concentration, which may help your memory focus as well. Vitamin C can also help with your immune system.
Other vitamins might improve memory loss specifically, like folic acid. Typically used in combination with B-vitamins, folic acid is sometimes used to treat memory loss and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Further, Vitamin E is thought to slow down age-related changes to the body if taken as a supplement. As you may know, memory loss is a common problem associated with growing older, and Vitamin E may help slow down the process. While taking vitamins to improve your memory function may be helpful, it is always a good idea to speak with your doctor before starting a new regimen of supplements, especially to make certain that the vitamins will not cause a bad reaction with another medication you may be taking.
