Vegetarian: To Meat or Not to Meat?

VegetarianVegetarian lifestyles have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it's difficult to find people who at one point or another haven't come into contact with this alternative diet and way of living. Almost all restaurants offer vegetarian options on their menus now, and almost everyone knows at least one person who eats a vegetarian diet in one form or another. Essentially, being vegetarian means that a person has adopted a diet that consists of primarily plant-based foods with little or no consumption of animal products, with different types of vegetarians practicing varying ways of eating.

As for why someone would choose to be a vegetarian, possibilities may include:

  • Ethical reasons
  • Religion
  • Health reasons
  • Weight management
  • Environmental concerns
  • Cultural beliefs

There are many benefits associated with being a vegetarian; however, there are some nutritional concerns that arise with a diet that contains no meat. Depending on the level of vegetarianism an individual practices, there are different issues that should be taken into consideration such as getting enough proteins and amino acids in your diet.

Being a vegetarian is considered by its supporters to be an extremely healthy, eco-friendly, and fulfilling way of life. However, it is important to consult with your primary care provider before you decide to become a vegetarian. Some people require different dietary requirements than others, and your doctor will be able to ensure that you are healthy enough to follow a vegetarian diet, or any other diet plan.
