Vegetarian Health: What Are the Concerns?

Vegetarian HealthPeople in different cultures have been practicing vegetarian diets for centuries, and in recent decades it has become an increasingly popular way of life in the United States and many other parts of the world. Even though vegetarianism isn't anything new, there are some vegetarian health concerns that some health care providers have been looking into.

Generally speaking, there are very few vegetarian health concerns, but the few that do exist need to be taken seriously by those who have made the decision to adopt this lifestyle. The number one concern for nutritionists and doctors has always been vegetarian nutrition. There are some important nutrients, such as vitamin B12 and some fatty acids that cannot be found in plant-based foods alone.

Ensuring that enough protein is being consumed is another important aspect of vegetarian health. While many nutritional experts feel that vegetarian diets are healthy and nutritionally adequate, making sure that the right proteins are being included in meals has been a consistent challenge for many vegetarians.

Because of this, it is often recommended that strict practitioners take a vegetarian health supplement to ensure they are meeting their nutritional needs. However, since there are many different types of vegetarians, this is not always necessary as some still do choose to include some animal products and meats.

Aside from these concerns, vegetarian health is considered to be extremely positive. There are a variety of benefits to eating a mostly vegetarian diet, which is why more and more people each year make the switch and say no to meat. Not only is it considered by many to be an exceptionally responsible way to eat, but vegetarians also tend to be a healthier weight, have a lower risk of developing some diseases, and tend to be happier with their food choices than non-vegetarians.

If you are considering becoming a vegetarian or have concerns about common vegetarian health issues, it is important that you consult with your primary care provider. Different people have different nutritional requirements, so you should ensure you are healthy enough for vegetarianism before you make any drastic changes to your diet.
