How to Use a Neti Pot for Congestion

If you’re one of the many Americans who are tired of the side effects of prescription and over-the-counter medicines, then you may have heard of using neti pots as a natural yet effective way to relieve congestion. Once more obscure, neti pots are rapidly gaining in popularity because of their gentle yet extremely effective results. However, once you have read about the many benefits of neti pots, you may be wondering, “How do I use a neti pot for congestion?”

Easy to use, a neti pot simply requires two ingredients: salt and water. Before you can use a neti pot for congestion, you must heat up some water and allow salt, preferably sea salt, to dissolve in it. A commonly used amount is two Tablespoons of salt per two cups of water. When you use a neti pot for congestion, the water should be lukewarm, not hot, to prevent burning the delicate tissue in your nasal cavity, and it should be non-chlorinated, as chlorine can be drying. Also, be sure the salt is completely dissolved to avoid chunks that could cause cuts or scrapes while you use the neti pot for congestion.

Once you have warmed up the salt water, the next step is to insert the spout of the pot into one of your nostrils. In order to properly use a neti pot for congestion, you should tilt your head to one side, away from the side the neti pot is on, so the water runs into your nasal cavity. Be sure to hold your breath as you pour so you don’t accidentally swallow or inhale the water. As the water flows through your nasal cavity, it washes away excess mucus, as well as outside particles such as pollen and dust. As you use the neti pot for congestion, it is advisable to stand over a bathtub or sink so the water can drain away after it washes your nasal cavity. Many people find that when they use a neti pot for congestion, they only need a single pot. However, if you still feel congested after using a full pot, wait 10-15 minutes before trying again to allow the salt and the heat to work.

Now that you know how to use a neti pot for congestion, you can quickly and easily integrate nasal irrigation next time you have a cold, allergies, or any other ailment. If you’re looking for a neti nasal pot, we offer the Växa Neti Nasal Pot to help you take advantage of this natural and gentle method.
