Uric Acid Levels: How Can You Maintain a Proper Balance?

Uric Acid LevelsUric acid is one of the most important antioxidants found in our bodies. However, unbalanced uric acid levels have been found to cause a variety of painful health problems. Some patients are more predisposed to having abnormal levels of uric acid in their systems, and based on your health history, your doctor may decide to have your uric acid levels tested. Patients who may be suffering from, or who have a family history of gout, people who have recently undergone chemotherapy or radiation, and patients who suffer from kidney or liver conditions are all considered to be at risk for high uric acid levels.

Uric acid is responsible for the breakdown of purines, natural compounds that exist in the body and are commonly found in high-protein foods. High levels of uric acid can signal one of two problems -- the overproduction of uric acid due to high levels of purines, or the inability to rid your body of excess uric acid. Uric acid can build up can cause painful crystals in some joints (gout) or in the kidneys (kidney stones).

If your doctor has determined you have high uric acid levels, he or she may suggest you go on a special "uric acid diet," possibly in conjunction with medication depending on the severity of your condition. A uric acid diet generally recommends that followers avoid:

  • Organ meats (liver and kidney)
  • Red meat
  • Sugars
  • Sardines
  • Anchovies
  • Alcohol

If you have a family history of gout or kidney problems, or you suspect you may be suffering from high uric acid levels, contact your health care provider. He or she can run proper tests to determine whether you are suffering from elevated uric acid levels and will be able to help you create a treatment plan that works best for you and your needs.
