A Uric Acid Diet for Joint and Kidney Health
People who are suffering from gout or kidney stones, which are often caused by abnormally high uric acid levels, are frequently recommended by their health care providers to consider a uric acid diet. This diet may be able to help naturally lower uric acid levels and make the management of these painful conditions more tolerable.
While uric kidney stones are fairly common in people with elevated levels of uric acid, the most common condition from the excess of this complicated antioxidant is gout. This painful type of arthritis, which is often paired with diabetes, is the accumulation of crystallized uric acid on the joints in the toes, fingers, feet, and knees. This makes performing simple, everyday functions extremely painful and difficult. While gout can often be treated, if ignored it can become chronic and cause permanent problems. Thankfully, many people have found that they can avoid this by following a strict uric acid diet.
Since uric acid is used to breakdown purines, a natural protein compound, the lower the amount of purines you consume, the lower your uric acid levels will be. People on uric acid diets are recommended to:
- Avoid high-protein meats like beef, venison, and seafoods, as well as any organ means like liver or kidney
- Avoid high-protein vegetables like cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms, and asparagus
- Increase their intake of dairy, especially milk and yogurt
- Consume less sugary drinks and candies
- Drink lots of water
- Avoid alcohol
