Types of Meditation

Types of MeditationMeditation is becoming more and more of a familiar practice these days due to the variety of benefits it offers to people of all ages. However, what many people don't realize is that there are many different types of meditation and that each variation offers its own benefits to the practitioner due to the different goals each has.

Since the practice of meditation is centuries old, there has been plenty of time for many different cultures and people to develop their own techniques throughout the history of meditation. Today, the main forms of meditation include:

  • Religious meditation - Meditation was first developed as part of rituals for many of the world's major religions, including Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Jainism, and even Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. In many parts of the world, there are still religious centers dedicated to the practice of meditation.
  • Spiritual meditation - For many, meditation may not be part of their religious practice, but it still plays a major part in their spiritual development through the use of meditation positions and other techniques. It is widely believed that dedicated meditative practice can help people center their minds and achieve peace with themselves and the world around them.
  • Therapeutic meditation - As part of an alternative therapy like yoga or tai chi, of all the types of meditation, therapeutic practice is believed to have the biggest effect on a person's health. It is regarded to provide patients with the means to relieve stress and anxiety, relax, and even relieve pain.

If you are considering adding one of these types of meditation to your current health regimen, consult with your primary care provider and an experienced meditation instructor to determine which of these fits best into your lifestyle and requirements.
