Is Medicine Necessary for Treating ADHD?

The short answer is no, a person with ADHD does not always need medication for ADHD to treat his or her symptoms. There are several other methods for treating ADHD. While prescription medications may work for some people, they may not work for you. Plus, you simply may not need them. There are other ways to deal with the symptoms ADHD causes, and you can try several until you find what works best for you or the person with ADHD you’re trying to help. Ways of treating ADHD that don’t require medication are:

  • Behavioral therapy. People who have ADHD, especially children, look for consistent positive feedback. Try not to focus on weaknesses or faults, and also try to praise your child when you can. When problems do need to be addressed, make sure you do so at the time of the situation. For example, if your child misbehaves at the grocery store, do not wait until you return home to reprimand your child. Instead, calmly approach the situation when it happens; that way the child knows what he or she did wrong and the event can be avoided next time.
  • Natural remedies that support the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system.  Natural remedies may be used for treating ADHD by controlling chemical imbalances in the brain without using stronger prescription drugs. These methods may not work on everyone, but if the symptoms are not too severe, natural remedies may be very beneficial.
  • Following a special diet and avoiding possible culprits that cause ADHD symptoms to flare up. Some foods, like dairy products and foods high in sugar, can make ADHD symptoms worse. It may help to reduce or eliminate intake of these sorts of foods for two weeks, and then gradually reintroduce the foods to see if those dietary restrictions had an effect on treating ADHD behaviors.

When treating ADHD, it is important to remember that you do have options. Having ADHD does not mean a lifetime of taking pills, and you should consult with your doctor if you are considering medications for treating ADHD.
