Toddler Behavior Problems: What Is Normal?
Almost every parent experiences a period of difficulty with his or her young children at one point or another. Often referred to as "the terrible twos", this predictable period is often at its worst when kids are toddlers. But what are normal toddler behavior problems, and when should you start to be concerned?
There's a fine line between what is normal behavior that your child will outgrow and what could be the sign of an on-going behavioral problem. Normal actions that may also be associated with toddler behavior problems include:
- Aggression
- Hair pulling
- Yelling
- Biting
- Throwing things
- Hitting
- Tantrums
- Disruptiveness
- Interrupting
- Defiance
- Agitation
- Clinginess
Most children will outgrow these behaviors as they age, normally by the age of 5. However, if these behaviors continue past toddler age and follow your children as they enter school, especially if it becomes a disturbance to their class or hinders their education, your child may be suffering from a type of behavioral disorder.
If you suspect your child has a problem, it is best to consult with an experienced professional as soon as possible. The sooner you seek help for your child, the more treatment options are available to help them deal with their emotional and behavioral issues.
However, if you are having trouble dealing with normal toddler behavior problems, your child's doctor may be able to give you some tips on how to get your child under control, especially in public, in order to avoid embarrassment and live a more harmonious life with your young child.
