Thyroid Health
You may have noticed at visits to your health care provider that they may want to speak to you about your thyroid health. Even if they have not brought it up to you, chances are you have seen pamphlets or posters about its importance. If you feel in the dark about the ins and outs of the thyroid as well as how to maintain healthy function, don't fret; many people are unaware of this gland and its importance in maintaining a healthy body.
When discussing thyroid health, it is important to first talk about the function of the thyroid. This small endocrine gland, which is located in the neck, is responsible for the release and control of a variety of hormones that affect nearly every metabolic process in the body. When the thyroid is functioning properly, you hardly even realize that it is doing anything at all. However, when thyroid disorders arise, you may become painfully aware that there is a problem.
Common thyroid problems include an enlarged thyroid and abnormal hormone secretion, which can result in weight problems, autoimmune conditions, and problems with development in infants with thyroid health conditions.
Thyroid problems are often hereditary, so you should know if you are at risk for developing a thyroid condition and know which symptoms of thyroid problems you should watch out for. However, it is still important to keep an eye on your thyroid even if you have a healthy thyroid and no family history of health problems since they can develop slowly, and it may take a while to notice you even have a problem. Consult with your health care provider to learn more about thyroid health and how you can monitor you well-being to catch problems before they become a serious issue for you or your family. |
