Stress Management Techniques

Life can be hectic. Work, the kids, the pets, the mortgage; everything can add up to become one big stress ball on your shoulder. Still, discovering stress management techniques for coping with stress are essential in order to live a healthy, happy life.

Stress management techniques can be as basic as starting a stress journal to jot down anything you want to vent about from your day. For one week write down anything that caused you a negative physical or emotional reaction. Note details like what you felt, when the issue occurred and how stressful the situation was using a 1 to 5 scale, one being not too intense to five being severely intense, according to a health Web site.

After you’ve filled out the journal, focus on the items that made you severely stressed and work on them.  For example if rush-hour traffic is a cause for annoyance, maybe try and arrive and leave work 30 minutes earlier to avoid the chaos.

Other useful stress management techniques involve time management skills:

  • Set goals and realistic deadlines
  • Throw away clutter
  • Make an outline detailing your tasks for the day
  • Use a planner
  • Establish a priority level to your tasks

But probably one of the best stress management techniques you can practice is taking the time to rest and relax. A well-rested person is more likely to handle any stressful situation with a smile.
