Psoriasis
- Symptoms and Treatments
Psoriasis is classified
by the overproduction of skin cells that results in underlying cells
reaching the surface and dying. The affected area will appear as
red raised plaques with white scales. It happens most often on elbows,
knees, hands, feet, and the scalp, though it is possible to develop
on other parts of the body as well. Psoriasis may present with fingernail
and toenail discoloration or pitting, and you may also develop psoriatic
arthritis as well, though only 20-30% of those affected do.
Treatments for Psoriasis:
Treatment for mild psoriasis is relatively simple. You can apply
moisturizing lotions, lay out in the sun, and treat the scalp as
you would for dandruff. For more severe cases, you should see a
dermatologist who may prescribe topical corticosteroids. There are
triggers that can cause outbreaks of psoriais, including stress,
alcohol use, and skin injuries. If you suspect that you may have
psoriasis and your at-home treatments are ineffective, contact a
dermatologist to find out what he or she recommends for clearing
up your psoriasis.
