Molluscum
Contagiosum - Symptoms and Treatments
Your skin is your largest organ,
and it acts as a barrier against infection. When your immune system
is compromised, your skin may not be able to prevent infections
from breaking through that barrier. Molluscum Contagiosum is a contagious
skin infection that is characterized by small, flesh colored, or
slightly pink bumps that can become irritated and inflamed. The
areas of the body where molluscum contagiosum form are:
- Chest
- Abdomen
- Skin folds, such as on the inner elbow and
under the breast
- Groin
- Face
- Eyelids
As with any skin condition, it is always
advisable to consult a physician to make sure that there is no other
health condition that may be causing the skin irritation. In the
case of molluscum contagiosum, your physician may recommend removal
through freezing or electrocautery (removal by electric needle).
At home skin treatments may help alleviate the discomfort associated
with this condition as well. Because this condition is contagious,
you should take precautionary measures against spreading the infection
to others.
