Lichen
Planus - Your Immune System Gone Haywire
Your body has built in defense
systems; your skin performs as the first line of defense, and your
immune system takes it from there. However, when the immune system
is weak, your skin may suffer the consequences. Lichen planus is
the result of your immune system attacking your skin, hair, and
mucous membranes. It is characterized by the reddish-purple bumps
that appear flat on top and may cause itching. The areas where lichen
planus occur on the body are:
- Lower back
- Genitals
- Neck
- Legs
- Wrists
- Ankles
Lichen planus can generally be treated by
applying anti-itch medications and oral antihistamines; however,
in severe cases, you may want to consult a physician. Your immune
system is one of your most valuable assets, and ensuring its health
should be one of your top healthcare priorities. Lichen planus may
be your body’s way of alerting you to a larger immune system
problem.
