Keratosis
Pilaris - Symptoms and Treatments
Keratosis pilaris is often misdiagnosed
as acne; however, it is a genetic disorder of the hair follicles
that can lead to redness, swelling, and irritation. The appearance
is similar to acne, and its appearance during adolescence can be
misleading. However, the source of keratosis pilaris is the hair
follicle and not the pore, as is the case with acne. The different
areas of the body where keratosis pilaris appears are:
- Upper arms
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Legs
It is possible to develop keratosis pilaris
anywhere on the body that hair grows; the only safe areas are your
palms and the bottoms of your feet. Treatment for keratosis pilaris
can be done at home through exfoliation, cleansing, and vitamin
and mineral supplements. By feeding your skin from the inside out
with a diet that is low in saturated fats and sugars, and by taking
oral vitamin supplements, you have a much better chance of not developing
keratosis pilaris, and your body has a better chance of fighting
it off once you have developed this condition.
