Impetigo
- Symptoms and Treatments
Impetigo is a common, contagious
skin infection that occurs to children under the age of two. It
can be the result of an insect bite or a cut; however, it can occur
without any pre-existing skin lesion. It is the result of bacteria
entering the skin, and though it is not serious, you may want to
speak to a physician to rule out other more serious skin conditions.
Symptoms of Impetigo:
- Red sores that mainly occur on the face
around the mouth and nose
- The sores will rupture quickly and secrete
fluids for a few days
- Itching
Treatments for Impetigo:
For less serious cases of Impetigo, it is best to just keep the
area clean and let it heal on its own. In more serious cases, you
physician may prescribe oral and/or topical antibiotics. Because
this condition occurs to young children, any comforting measure
you can provide, as long as it doesn’t bring more bacteria
to the lesion, would be helpful. Cold cloths and ice may provide
some comfort.
