Erythema
Nodosum - Symptoms and Treatments
Erythema nodosum is a skin inflammation
that occurs on the front of the legs below the knees and is characterized
by the appearance of red, painful lumps, or nodules. The swelling
associated with erythema nodosum is the result of inflammation of
the fatty layer of skin on this area of the body. This condition
may occur alone, or it may occur in conjunction with other illnesses,
including:
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Fungal diseases
- Strep throat
Fortunately, erythema nodosum will resolve
itself within six weeks. However, if you are suffering from severe
discomfort or it does not seem to be healing on its own, a doctor
may recommend anti-inflammatory medication or cortisone injections.
It’s always best to consult a physician for a skin irritation
that does not heal on its own in order to rule out the presence
of any other condition that may be contributing to or causing the
skin irritation.
