Epidermoid
Cysts - Symptoms and Treatments
Epidermoid cysts are classified
by the appearance of a sac-like growth that appears to be filled
with keratin, a soft yellowish fluid, which is the same protein
that makes up hair, skin, and nails. They can form as the result
of an injury or clogged hair follicle that causes the outer layer
of skin (epidermis) to grow into the middle layer (dermis). They
are very common and can happen to anyone at any age. Though they
are harmless, they can appear extremely unsightly; however, you
should not attempt to remove the epidermoid cyst on your own because
you may cause more significant damage to your skin and they cyst
may just reappear. Consult a physician for different treatment options.
He or she may recommend any of the following:
- Freezing it off
- Electrosurgery
- Laser removal
While epidermoid cysts are usually harmless,
it is always best to consult a doctor regarding any skin lesion
or irritation that isn’t healing on its own in order to rule
out any other possible medical condition that may be causing or
contributing to the problem. Over-the-counter skin creams, and natural
skin creams may help minimize the appearance of the cyst if you
are unable to have it removed.
