Carbuncle
- Symptoms and Treatments
Carbuncle is a bacterial
skin infection characterized by the presence of a small mass or
lump below the skin that may grow to the size of a golf ball. Other
symptoms include a white or yellow pustule in the center, an accompanying
fever, fatigue, and body aches. The bacterium that causes carbuncles
is staphylococcus aureus, and it is contagious, so you should take
precautionary measures to prevent spreading it to others, including
hand washing and bandaging the carbuncle. People that are likely
to develop carbuncles may have other health conditions, including:
- Weak immunity
- Diabetes
- Dermatitis
- Poor hygiene
Treatments for Carbuncle:
If you suspect you have a carbuncle, treatment can be done at home
by applying a warm cloth, cleaning it with antibacterial soaps,
and allowing it to drain on its own slowly, over the period of a
couple of weeks. If the carbuncle does not drain on its own, and
continues to grow, you should talk to a doctor to make sure that
there isn’t a more serious skin condition present.
