Sinus Infection Free: Vitamins, Minerals,
Essential Fatty Acids
At the
very least, a combination of basic antioxidant vitamins
and minerals should be regularly taken daily even
by healthy people for maintenance:
Vitamins:
A, C and E
Minerals: Zinc and Selenium
“Antioxidant”
vitamins and minerals help to ward off “free radicals”
- atoms or groups of atoms floating in the atmosphere with
unpaired electrons which can attach to and damage cell membranes.
When this occurs, cells may function poorly or die and our
immune system goes down.
Many
other vitamins, minerals, enzymes and even some metals are
important to our health, too. Usually, the food we eat and
the amount of these things our body manufactures aren’t

How
much is too much or too little vitamins?
The RDA - recommended “normal” daily allowance
- of vitamin C (60 mg) will do nothing to alleviate a sinus
infection, or to give future sinus relief to the person
prone to sinus infections. Various studies say at least
800-1,000 mg of vitamin C should be taken each day (this
amount is also good to maintain healthy gums). But for sinus
infection relief, most natural health nutritionists will
suggest up to 2,000 mg of vitamin C twice per day. Växa

High
doses of vitamin C can create diarrhea, which is actually
good to a certain extent. Your gastrointestinal tract needs
to be cleaned out. It’s better NOT to stop a reasonable
amount of diarrhea if you have a sinus infection or other
respiratory ailment. Just take in plenty of liquids –
water, beverages with electrolytes and clear soups to stop

Some
doctors theorize that 2,000 mg of vitamin C even once a
day is too much. This is because Vitamin C, as part of the
antioxidant vitamins and minerals, needs to be balanced
out and complemented by the other antioxidants. Any harmful
effects are negated by enough of the vitamins A and E, minerals
Zinc and Selenium.
When
already sick with an infection, the doses of vitamins A
and E, minerals Zinc and Selenium should also be raised
(consult an alternative or complementary medicine physician
or a health food nutritionist).
Essential
Fatty Acids
Like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, our bodies need lubrication
to remain flexible – “squeak-free” you
might say. Keeping our insides “slippery” helps
toxins and other waste products excrete more efficiently,
prevents uninvited outside elements from taking up residence,
and in turn keeps our mucous membranes clear. Some fatty
acids are derivatives of fish oils and flax, which our bodies
usually don’t get enough of.
