Sinus Pressure Is a Common Symptom of Sinus Infections
When you’re affected by
a sinus infection, sinus pressure is a common symptom. The sinus
pressure is caused when the nasal passages are infected, inflamed
and blocked by mucus. We all have four pairs of sinuses in the facial
part of the skull: the frontal sinus is in the forehead, the maxillary
sinus is below the eyes, the sphenoid is between the eyes, while
the ethmoid is behind the eyes. When you are experiencing a sinus
infection, any of these sinuses can have sinus pressure.
These sinuses produce mucus to moisturize the nose and throat. When
the sinuses are healthy, the mucus drains and air freely flows in
and out of the nasal passages. If the mucus clumps up and accumulates
in the nasal passages, it creates sinus pressure. Also, with the
pressure, the membranes in the nasal passage begin to pull away
from the area and that force also contributes to the sinus pressure.
Sinus pressure can affect you on the forehead, behind and below
the eyes, and of course between the eyes. Sinus pressure symptoms
include:
- Dental pain
- Pounding pain around the head and face
- Tightness around the eyes and head
Sinus pressure can not only occur because
of a sinus infection, it can also be caused by a cold or flu, air
trapped in the sinuses or common everyday allergens like mold, pollen
and pet dander. Consult your doctor if the sinus pressure doesn’t
cease.
