Non-Antibiotic
Prescription Medicine for Sinus Infections
Since
antibiotics are only effective against bacterial sinus infections
and are known to create subsequent yeast infestations, there
are other prescription medications which may help alleviate
viral and fungal sinus infections, such as quinolone and
fluconazole drugs.
Quinolone:
A common prescription is “quinolone” antibacterial
medicine. Quinolones are comparatively weak against the new
super bacteria, but can be effective without encouraging the
growth of fungus or killing good intestinal flora.
Side
Effects:
May have deteriorating effects on tendon tissue.
Fluconazole:
The “fluconazole” prescription drugs, which are
fungicides (anti-fungal medication), are more effective than
antibiotics on sinus infections because fungus that grows
in mucus is often a form of yeast (link to candida page) and
antibiotics (link to antibiotics page) can create more yeast.
A fluconazole specifically targets and kills yeast fungus.
Whether
from bacteria or virus, a sinus infection can have fungal
yeast develop in the thickened mucus. And an infection that
starts as viral can also end up attracting bacteria and
fungus due to constriction
of the airways.
“Fluconazoles”
include prescription medicine for things like vaginal yeast
and toenail fungus. There are now fluconazole nasal sprays
for the sinuses. Given in their ingestible form to reach
intestinal and vaginal yeast, a fluconazole will be more
effective than topical creams for overall cleansing.
Side
Effects: Fluconazole drugs can produce a crampy stomach
and dizziness, or cause a reaction called “die off”
which can make you feel sicker before feeling better. But
this is a good sign – it usually means they are getting
to the root source of the problem. A toxic system will feel
imbalanced while the toxins are being removed. These symptoms
should subside.
Taken
for long periods, some fluconazole drugs can have adverse
effects on liver function. Doctors generally know this and
watch their patients. There are many herbal aids to guard
the liver. Växa makes a product called Liver Formula
that can keep the liver detoxified and regenerated, and
is soon introducing a homeopathic alternative to fluconazole
spray - a nasal irrigation product called Sinus Relief.
Like
antibiotics, a fluconazole prescription should be completely
finished. Any other medication being taken should be discussed
between doctor and patient to avoid negative interaction.
