How Signs of ADHD May Be Mistaken for Something Else
If you're wondering how to know if you are dealing with ADHD, or if your child is dealing with the disorder, it's good to learn exactly what signs and symptoms to look for. For instance, if a teacher talks to you often about your child misbehaving in class, you may want to talk to both the teacher and your child in depth to get to the root of the issue. Sometimes, impulsive or disruptive behavior can be signs of ADHD, and this may be why your child's teacher has contacted you. Likewise, if you find your mind wandering at work, or if you get so engrossed in one project that you don't meet other important deadlines, it may be a good idea to speak with your doctor about adult ADHD.
Some signs of ADHD in kids can include:
- Inattentive behavior - having trouble staying organized, appearing not to listen when being spoken to, being easily distracted.
- Hyperfocus - the opposite of inattentiveness, hyperfocus causes a person to get stuck on one project or idea so intently that he or she forgets to, or doesn't have time to, complete other tasks.
- Hyperactivity - constant fidgeting and moving around, or a seeming inability to stay quiet.
- Impulsive behavior - interrupting others often or blurting out answers in school without being called on.
It's important to recognize that all of these signs of ADHD need not be present for a diagnosis. Some people experience only a couple symptoms, while other people may struggle with more. If you think that you may have ADHD or you think your child is struggling with ADHD symptoms, you should talk to your doctor to rule out other problems like stress from major life events, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, psychological disorders, or other medical conditions.
