Saw
Palmetto: Prostate Health from an Herbal Extract?
The
link between saw palmetto and prostate health has been studied for
years, particularly in Europe and the United States. Saw palmetto
extract comes from the fruit of a saw palmetto, a small palm tree
also known as the American dwarf palm tree and the cabbage palm.
Saw palmetto is native to the southeastern United States and is
commonly seen throughout Florida. Historical records indicate that
the fruit of saw palmetto was used as medicine by Seminole tribes
in Florida for treatment of prostate problems, bladder infections,
and more.
Today,
saw palmetto is mainly used for relief of urinary problems caused
by an enlarged prostate gland, or BPH. Saw palmetto prostate formulas
are derived from the ripe fruit of the saw palmetto tree, such as
whole berries or ground and dried berries. You can find saw palmetto
prostate supplements in capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, and
teas.
There
have been numerous studies suggesting that saw palmetto is beneficial
for enlarged prostate (BPH) symptoms. It appears that saw palmetto
offsets the hormones in men that may cause prostate enlargement.
Saw palmetto extract also seems to have an anti-inflammatory effect
on the prostate gland. All in all, it is important to remember that
prostate trouble should be examined and taken care of immediately.
In rare cases, prostate symptoms could indicate a life-threatening
condition.
