Restless Leg Syndrome Causes and How You Can Help Control Symptoms

Restless Leg Syndrome Causes and How You Can Help Control SymptomsSince little is known about what causes Restless Leg Syndrome (also known as RLS), making a diagnosis and coming up with effective treatment can be difficult at times even though it is a fairly common condition among people of all ages. However, there are several factors that can be taken into consideration when reviewing possible Restless Leg Syndrome causes, include:

  • Pregnancy - Women who are pregnant or experiencing hormonal changes such as menopause often report signs of RLS. Some women who have never reported experiencing RLS symptoms will experience it during pregnancy, often saying it quickly stops soon after delivery of their child.
  • Heredity - RLS has been linked to heredity in up to 50% of people who suffer from this condition. Individuals are more prone to develop RLS if someone in their family also suffers from the condition.
  • Chemical imbalances - Restless Leg Syndrome is often considered to be attributed to a chemical imbalance of dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine controls muscle control throughout the body, and too much or too little of this neurotransmitter may cause the sensations that accompany this condition.
  • Gender - Women are more likely to develop RLS, and at an earlier age, than men due to hormonal fluctuations due to menstruation.

While it is a fairly common condition, Restless Leg Syndrome causes impairments and complications in the lives of many people. Speak with your doctor if you think you may be suffering from RLS, and they will be able to help you identify the best mode of treatment for your individual situation.
