Restaurant Nutrition
Watching what you eat is integral for people who are trying to monitor their personal nutrition and maintain a healthy body weight. However, restaurant nutrition is something that consistently throws people for a loop, making eating out difficult for people who are trying to follow stricter dietary guidelines. However, there are some tips to keep in mind when you dine out so eating at a restaurant doesn't turn into an unenjoyable experience.
What makes restaurant nutrition so difficult is that someone else is preparing your foods with a variety of ingredients you may not be aware of, and unlike food you prepare at home you can't look up the nutrient facts for your meal. Even when you think you are eating healthfully, the fact is that there may be unknown and potentially unhealthy aspects of your meal. But if you follow these simple tips, eating out can be a great and fun experience for even the strictest eater.
- Portion control - Many restaurants will serve portions that are well above a recommended serving size. Because of this, it is up to the diner to control how much they eat. Share an entrée with a friend, or make it a point to bring half of your meal home for the next day to avoid overeating.
- Avoid sauces - While they may be tasty, sauces and dressings are packed with calories, fat, and carbohydrates in many cases, especially cream based causes. Ask for your dressing on the side if possible, and opt for low fat/light dressings or sauces if they are available. Fancy words like aioli simply mean you are eating flavored mayonnaise, so ask your sever what a condiment is if you aren't sure.
- Think about what you are eating - Poor nutrition can be found in unlikely places. Think about what you are ordering before you assume that it is the healthiest choice. For example, salads may seem like a good choice, but not when they are loaded with toppings and drowned in dressing.
- Just say no to fried foods - Anything fried is usually not going to be great for you, so opt for baked or grilled foods instead. Also substitute fried sides for fresh sides if possible, such as side salads, baked potatoes (sans toppings), or veggies.
There are many ways that you can monitor your restaurant nutrition when eating out. Just because you are dieting doesn't mean you can't enjoy a nice meal in a restaurant; you just need to be aware of what you are eating so you can make an informed and healthy decision.
