The Various Symptoms of Bronchitis

Bronchitis is a respiratory disease that occurs when the mucus membrane in the lungs’ airways become inflamed. This disease can be caused by working closely and frequently with harmful chemical fumes, dust or other dangerous substances. Still, the leading cause of bronchitis is smoking. There are two forms of bronchitis and they are acute and chronic; the acute version lasts about six weeks while chronic bronchitis can last for more than two years. When the mucus membrane in your lungs becomes inflamed, the passageways become narrower and the airways to the lungs shuts off causing symptoms of bronchitis such as bouts of coughing, thick phlegm and shortness of breath.

Although the typical person produces several tablespoons of mucus a day, the mucus is usually clear or white. If you’re producing mucus that is yellowish-gray or green then you are exhibiting one of the main symptoms of bronchitis. Other symptoms of bronchitis include:
  • An accumulation of the mucus, since people without bronchitis usually swallows it with their saliva
  • Discolored mucus that comes up when you cough
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing
  • Sinus fullness
  • Chest congestion
  • Slight fever
  • A burning feeling in your chest
Noticing symptoms of bronchitis in children may be more difficult because children tend to swallow any mucus or material that they may have coughed up. Also, if you’re a smoker and you are exhibiting symptoms of bronchitis, stop smoking immediately. If you have acute bronchitis, it will develop into chronic bronchitis if you continue smoking. And if you smoke, it is not normal to have to clear your throat of phlegm in the morning; that, too, is included in the symptoms of bronchitis.
