Bronchial Asthma Affects More Than 22 Million Americans

Bronchial asthma is just another name that people have given asthma, a chronic disease that affects the lungs by inflaming them. This illness leads to periodic bronchial asthma attacks, wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness of the chest. It is estimated that about 300 million people in the world suffer from bronchial asthma, and more than 22 million of those are North Americans. Sadly, 6.5 million of those sufferers are children.

People who suffer from bronchial asthma may have contracted the disease genetically or it could possibly be due to allergies. Bronchial asthma is thought to be linked with mast cells, which are the allergy-causing cells that release chemicals like histamine. Histamine is responsible for stuffy and drippy noses during colds as well as constriction of your airways during an asthma attack. There are also two allergy-related white blood cells that are associated with asthma: eosinophils and T lymphocytes.

These cells bring about symptoms of bronchial asthma such as airway inflammation, limitations in your airflow, and other respiratory symptoms like chest tightness and breathlessness. There are various triggers that affect sufferers of bronchial asthma and they include:
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Exercise
  • Air pollution and air toxins
  • Allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander and pollen
  • Colds, flu or pneumonia
  • Emotional actions like crying or laughing
  • Stressful or anxious moments
  • Extreme changes in temperature
  • Harsh perfumes or bath sprays
  • Food additives like MSG
  • More
If you’re experiencing any symptoms of bronchial asthma consult your doctor. Although it is a chronic disease that cannot be cured, there are ways to control your symptoms.
