Reasons for Memory Loss
Memory loss can affect anyone at any age, any time. Whether we forget an address, someone's name, where we placed our keys, or even what we are supposed to do this weekend, people forget things all the time. The reasons for memory loss are just as varied as the people who suffer it.
The most common reasons for memory loss include:
- Age - Becoming more forgetful is a normal part of getting older, however it is important to monitor age related memory loss.
- Distraction - A lot of the time, people just become distracted and forget something they have just been told or where they put something since a memory will quickly get replaced in working memory and never get stored as a long-term or even short-term memory.
- Depression - People who suffer from depression often complain that they have trouble remembering things. This is because the thought process of a depressed person is often a lot slower and less organized that someone who is more mentally healthy. They are also more easily distracted.
- Nutrition - Your brain requires adequate nutrition to function properly, just like any other part of your body. An unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle can cause your brain to perform below par, and you may become more forgetful.
- Stress - Much like depression, stress makes it much more difficult for memories to be made and stored, and people who are worrying about something else are far less likely to retain information and is one of the most common reasons for memory loss.
- Substance abuse - Smoking, alcohol abuse, and drug use can all take a toll on your brain, causing you to forget things you once knew, make up events that never happened, and fail to remember things that you should.
