Protein Supplements
Even though most people get adequate protein through the foods they eat, there are some cases in which people may need to take protein supplements to get enough of this vital nutrient. Usually this is due to some kind of medical condition, dietary restrictions, or people who are on extreme workout routines.
Protein is used in building muscle, repairing tissue, and creating many hormones and enzymes. Unfortunately, unlike many nutrients, protein is not stored in the body. It is used as it is consumed and must be replaced on a continual basis. To maintain a healthy level of the nutrient, some people may need to take protein supplements, such as oral supplements or protein shakes, to get the protein they need.
People with dietary restrictions and those who choose to eat a diet that is low in meat may want to consider taking protein supplements. Also, those who work out on a regular basis, such as body builders, need to replace the protein burned during working out quickly after completing it, and often supplements are the easiest protein source for them.
While protein supplements can be helpful to many people, you should still consult with your primary care provider or an experienced nutritionist or dietitian before you begin taking these or any other dietary supplements.
