Probiotic Supplements
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help the human body maintain normal system functions. For whatever reason, from time to time the bacteria levels in the digestive tract and other tracts (such as the urinary and reproductive tracts) can get off balance. This can allow some types of bacteria commonly found there to grow out of control and cause infections and other illnesses. However, many people find that they can maintain a normal balance of bacteria and better overall health by taking probiotic supplements.
The most common type of probiotic bacteria found in the body, and the most abundant in most probiotic supplements and foods, is lactic acid bacteria, a category which includes lactobacillus acidophilus. While many probiotics can be found in foods, many people find that probiotic supplements are the easiest and most direct way to help keep a normal balance of bacteria in the body, most of which include lactobacillus acidophilus. The supplements are often recommended by health care professionals to offset the negative side effects associated with antibiotics. Antibiotics kill off bacteria in the body, including the "good" bacteria as well as the bacteria causing the infection. By taking supplements or eating foods containing these beneficial bacteria, many people hope to maintain a healthy level -- and avoid issues caused by off balance levels -- while also getting rid of the "bad" bacteria.
Probiotic supplements can be used to help prevent against:
- Post-surgery inflammation
- Diarrhea
- Yeast infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Much more
As with many dietary supplements, probiotic supplements are not to be taken long term, and most people are able to maintain a healthy digestive tract and immune system with their diet alone.
