Probiotic Side Effects
Probiotics occur naturally in the body and are generally considered safe for all ages. However, even natural substances can cause adverse reactions, and probiotic side effects -- although rare -- are possible.
The most common probiotic side effects that are reported are usually mild and digestive in nature and include:
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Gas
- Constipation
- Over-stimulated immune system
The body is usually effective in producing enough of these helpful bacteria to get the job done, so oftentimes supplementation and diet changes are not necessary. However, too much of a good thing can end up being a very bad thing. Even though they are helpful, probiotics are still bacteria, and too many of them can cause side effects and illness. It is also important to realize that while they are generally safe, probiotic supplements are considered dietary supplements and are regulated as a food and not a drug, and as such are not tested for certain side effects that may occur when combined with existing supplements or medications you may be taking.
Speak to your health care provider before you begin adding probiotics to your health care plan. He or she will help determine if you have a need for more probiotic intake, and what the probiotics side effects may be.
