pH Balance Scale: The Chemistry of Body pH Balance

Through your own personal research, you may have learned about how body pH balance is important to your health. The theory behind body pH balance is that by maintaining your body’s pH within certain numbers on a pH balance scale, you are able to achieve an ideal environment within your body and thus, help your body heal itself. On the other hand, if your body pH balance is too acidic or too alkaline according to the pH scale, it creates a breeding ground for disease. This being the case, you may wonder about the science behind the pH balance scale and what the pH scale represents.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. In terms of chemistry, the pH scale reflects the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. Lower numbers on the pH scale denote acidic conditions. Higher numbers on the pH scale denote an alkaline, or basic, environment. Scientifically speaking, solutions with a pH of less than 7 are considered acidic, while those with a pH of greater than 7 are considered alkaline, or basic.

Using a pH scale to measure body chemistry is a little different. For example, an optimum pH level for urine would be between 6.5 and 7.5. However, many of the foods in today’s modern diet include many acid-forming foods such as meats, breads, pastas, and fats. Few people balance their diets with the proper amount of alkaline-forming foods like vegetables and fruits. Therefore, many of us are left with acid residue in our bodies and a highly acidic reading on urine pH test strips and the pH balance scale.

By maintaining proper body pH balance and testing urine according to the pH scale, you are able to cleanse your tissues of acidic and alkaline residues. Removing these residues from the body is essential to promoting overall health and enabling the body to function at its best.
