Overweight Children: A Growing Problem
Over the past few years, a shocking trend has become evident in American children -- a growing number of them are overweight or even obese, and the trend shows no sign of stopping. Children today spend more time inside watching TV, on the computer, and playing video games, and less time outside playing and being active. Couple that with overscheduled families that have less time to prepare healthy meals, relying instead on fast foods, and it's no wonder we are seeing more and more overweight children across this country ever year. In fact, statistics suggest that 1 in 3 children are considered overweight or obese according to the BMI scale and percentile growth scale used to measure children.
Aside from the teasing and taunting that overweight children may experience from their peers, they are also at risk for developing an array of serious health problems as they age if their weight does not improve. Overweight children are more likely to develop:
- High blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Type 2 diabetes
- Sleep apnea
- Asthma
- Liver disease
- Arthritis
- Depression
- Much more
