Osteoporosis and Nutrition
When we were younger, our parents used to nag us about drinking enough milk so that our bones will be strong, and we are bombarded with dairy advertisements singing the praises of calcium. While our mothers may have told us things to get us to eat and drink things we didn't want to, and while the purpose of advertising is to get us to buy things we don't necessarily need, they were right about calcium. However, there is more to bone and osteoporosis nutrition than calcium.
Our bones need a variety vitamins and minerals. The nutrients that are vital for optimum osteoporosis nutrition, aside from calcium, include:
- Phosphorus
- Magnesium
- Zinc
- Boron
- Chromium
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin B6 and B12
- Folic acid
- Many others
Consult with your health care provider about proper osteoporosis and bone nutrition in order to minimize bone loss due to aging. He or she will also be able to advise you on bone density testing and how you can maintain a healthy, active lifestyle for years to come.
