Organic Food Facts

Organic Food FactsThe production and consumption of organic food is steadily increasing every year, due in part to the fact that people are becoming more health conscious and beginning to incorporate more organic products into their diet as a way to positively affect their health. Eating organic foods is considered to be a great way to improve your health because it eliminates many of the harmful chemicals that is believed to play a role in illness and the weakening of our immune systems which is what makes it such a popular option. Aside from the obvious fact that organic food is "cleaner" than mass-produced and harvested products because it is free of unnatural chemicals, there are many other organic food facts that weigh in the favor of these healthy products.

Some key organic food facts according to proponents are:

  • Organic farming helps the environment by naturally making soil more fertile and encouraging natural organism development within the organic ecosystem.
  • Pesticides and chemicals used in conventional food development are believed to cause a variety of health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.
  • The consumption of non-organic food may increase a person's risk of having a weakened immune system and developing a variety of conditions.
  • Organically raised livestock are fed organic feed and allowed access to open areas for part of or all of the day. Livestock that have continued access to pastures and open areas are called "free range" and are often thought to be healthier animals and to produce more nutritious and better tasting meats, eggs, and dairy products.
  • Organic products, including both animal and plant products, are not altered in any way and are free from growth hormones, steroids, and other chemicals to make the grow larger, faster.
  • Organic farms must not only meet the normal standards set by the FDA, but also must be certified by a USDA approved organization in order to sell their food or products as "organic."

Along with these organic food facts, organically produced products are considered to be more nutritious and taste better, along with generally being a more healthy option for both adults and babies. To cut down on the cost of purchasing organic food, many people have begun to cultivate their own personal organic gardens. While homegrown food can't be considered "organic" by government standards, many times, it offers the same benefits as organically grown food you would buy at the store.
