Exercise
Enhances Memory Functioning
Recent studies have shown that
exercise is not only beneficial to your overall health; it is also
showing positive effects on memory and overall cognition. In multiple
studies, participants who exercise regularly have consistently scored
better on memory and recall studies than those who did not exercise
at all. Experts say that exercise appears to help slow the normal
aging process where brain tissue begins to shrink in the 40s. The
amount of exercise needed to help show improvements is not known;
however, researchers state that consistent exercise seems to have
the most positive effects. Some other benefits to exercise are:
- Improved circulation
- Higher energy levels
- Weight loss or maintenance
- Improved mood
Studies have shown that there is a direct link
between heart health and mind health. Cardio workouts, therefore,
have the most implicit effect on cognition and memory. Experts maintain,
however, that exercise of any sort can lead to improved health overall
and can have a positive effect on memory as well. Before you begin
any exercise regimen, you should discuss your plans with your healthcare
provider to be sure that you are healthy enough for a workout routine.
