Can
Depression Impair Memory?
The short answer is yes, depression
has been shown to have a negative effect on memory storage and retrieval.
Exactly why this is researchers do not yet have a clear cut answer
to. It is theorized that, in certain cases, it can be the result
of a lack of attention being paid to typical daily routines and
activities for those that suffer from depression. Depression sufferers
also may just lack the energy needed to actually go through all
of the mental processes necessary for typical memory operations.
Another theory is that depressed people have a tendency to focus
on sad memories, which can enhance their depression. Some of the
symptoms of depression are:
- Inability to function in your normal daily
routine. You may have a hard time getting out of bed in the
mornings.
- Lethargy, or feeling tired all the time
- Inability to concentrate
- Anger or irritability
- Loss of interest in social issues and events
- Suicidal thoughts
Serotonin is the chemical in the brain that
has been shown to be lacking in people suffering from depression.
Among other things, serotonin is responsible for blood flow to the
frontal lobe region of the brain. Modern anti-depressants can be
helpful in controlling serotonin levels in the brain. If you feel
that you may be suffering from depression contact your healthcare
provider and describe your symptoms. There are both natural remedies
as well as prescription medication that can be administered that
have shown positive results.
