What Medication Will Work Best for ADHD?

Even though there are options for different medication for ADHD on the market, you may not know which is best for you or your child. You may be wondering if medication for ADHD is even necessary. It’s important to know that you do have options when it comes to treating ADHD, and that medication may not be the best route for you to take. You should always talk to your doctor, as he or she can tell you about different ways to cope with ADHD without medication, including:

  • Following a special diet. Sometimes, certain foods can trigger ADHD symptoms or make the symptoms worse. By restricting certain foods for a period of two weeks, then reintroducing the foods one at a time and paying close attention to any behavioral changes, you may be able to find out which foods to avoid and calm the symptoms of ADHD.
  • Behavioral therapy. People with ADHD often crave positive feedback, so it is important to focus on praise rather than critique. If critique is necessary, it is important to do so at the time of the misbehavior. For example, if a child misbehaves at the grocery store, react calmly at that time--do not wait until you return home to reprimand your child, because your child may not understand why he or she is being punished.
  • Natural remedies. Some remedies focus on the brain and nervous system’s healthy functioning. These sorts of remedies can correct chemical imbalances in the brain that are triggering ADHD symptoms. Sometimes these symptoms are severe enough to warrant prescription medication for ADHD, but if the symptoms are milder, a natural remedy may be enough.

Medication for treating ADHD is not always necessary. There are other ways to cope with symptoms, and you should speak with your doctor before choosing a certain method. Your doctor can help you choose whether medication for ADHD symptoms is best or if you should choose a different method.
