Lipoic Acid: Energy for Your Cells and Body
Lipoic acid is a sulfur containing fatty acid that is also a potent antioxidant. It is said to generate energy for cells, which in turn promotes good cell health and communication in the battle against damaging free radicals. Lipoic acid is considered to be a "broad spectrum" antioxidant, because unlike other antioxidants, it is soluble in both fat and water (hydrophobic and hydrophilic), allowing greater cell penetration.
Due to its ability to work within any type of cell, lipoic acid and its effects have been the subjects of a wealth of medical and clinical research. Some of these studies have shown that it may even be able to help regenerate levels of other antioxidants that have been depleted in the oxidation process. Lipoic acid is also believed to be able to help prevent certain types of nerve damage since many antioxidants do not work within all cells. Medical trials of lipoic acid have also investigated its use in the possible prevention of conditions such as:
- Diabetic peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage caused by diabetes
- Cardia autonomic neuropathy, heart nerve damage caused by diabetes
- Regulation of blood sugar levels
- Burning mouth syndrome
- Migraines
- Skin damage caused by the sun
- Prevention of cataracts and glaucoma
Due to its wide range of health benefits, lipoic acid supplementation has many supporters. However, like any supplement or vitamin, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Consult with your physician to determine your need for lipoic acid supplements. He or she may be able to help you determine whether or not you should consider adding this, or any other antioxidant supplement, to your health plan.
