Licorice as an Adaptogenic Herb
Licorice as we know it, and what is often used in natural medicine, is derived from the root of the licorice plant, a legume that is closely related beans and peas. While their tastes are similar, licorice is not related to Anise, Star Anise, or Fennel, which often get confused.
Licorice is popular in naturopathic medicine, and it has long been a staple in popular Eastern medicine. The main component in licorice that is believe to create its effects and benefits is the compound glycyrrhizic acid, which also lends to its signature sweet taste. As an adaptogen, licorice may help to regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, as it has also been said to show anti-viral properties.
Licorice has long been used in Eastern medicine, as well as in conventional practices, to help manage:
- Mouth ulcers
- Peptic ulcers
- Constipation
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Some allergies
- Much more
Regardless of its believed health properties, it is usually advised that people speak to their doctor before adding licorice, or any other new supplement, to their health regimen.
